The magic of fall for many people is in the changing color of the leaves, the apple and pumpkin picking, and the fun activities at our area farms.
However, for others, the arrival of this season is the beginning of looking for chilling events to awaken the adrenaline of fear. This is because Halloween is celebrated in the fall, which leads to the opening of “haunted houses” and events to get a good scare.
In the year 1985, a group of people under the leadership of Father Louis Gigante began this annual tradition of celebrating the community in the streets on Halloween. What started with a small group of children has grown into the second largest Halloween parade in New York City. Each year the parade has a particular theme that captures the spirit of Halloween. New York City has a tour that reveals more than four hundred years of New York’s history of plagues, wars and turbulent times by visiting haunted places like the homes of Mark Twain, CNN anchor Anderson Cooper and Aaron Burr and telling stories and appearances from the Revolutionary War at a Prohibition-era speakeasy.
Pure Terror has 10 individual haunted attractions, all of which offer different spooky experiences. It is the longest horror attraction in the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
Blood Manor is a haunted house attraction made up of approximately 10,000 square feet of themed rooms, hallways, and a maze of passageways designed to maximize spooks. According to the description on the website “Blood Manor is designed to be the most intense, creepy and inducing haunted house attraction in the New York State area.”
The Hallow’s End Haunted House is one of Staten Island’s newest attractions. The venue is only open on weekends and tickets must be purchased at the door. Please note that there is a cash only policy.
If you’re looking for an immersive theatrical experience with Victorian Gothic-themed decor, look no further than Nightmare Gothic on the Lower East Side. The 49th annual New York City Halloween Village Parade will take place on Monday, October 31. This year’s theme is Freedom. New York is in full Halloween season and pets are not far behind to celebrate it. This amid the annual costume competition in which four-legged animals competed for top prizes on Saturday.
Dozens of puppies arrived at Tompkins Square Park for the return of the 32nd Annual Halloween Dog Parade in the East Village after being relocated last year.
The mascots, complete with creative colors and costumes, competed in categories including: “Best Costume on Wheels,” “Best Celebrity-Themed Costume,” and “Best Group Costume.”
The movies inspired a handful of Saturday looks, including the much-loved Pixar film “Up” and the summer blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick.”
This year’s Best in Show category is open to online voting and the winner will be announced on Halloween.
The haunted asylum complex, featured on various shows and in the media across the country, closed in 1952 due to disappearances of staff and patients, as well as intolerable living conditions. Now, the nursing home has reopened and is accepting new patients.
